Weekly Reflection 2: The Best Leadership Style

Weekly Reflections 2 (27th March 2024)

 The Best Leadership Style

Week 2; If talking about the best leadership style, for me it is very subjective. Why I said so, because leadership style usually has strong relationship with the person, which in this situation the leader’s personality traits. Any style of leadership can be effective depends on the specific personality of the leader and the needs of the team (Grover & Amit, 2024). If looking at the development of a leadership itself, the is evolution by time where it started with most leaders used an autocratic style. Then, move to creative style and with the current era most leaders love to apply a motivational style of leadership. This evolution does not mean that the earliest style is not appropriate to be used in current era, and new style is the best. Yet, it depends on the situation and the leader needs to be able to differentiate and choose which style of leadership that suitable at that particular situation. Therefore, as a leader, he/she personality plays a major role in order for he/her to deliver the effective way of leadership style. Grover & Amit (2024) also in their research identified that there is a strong relationship between the Big Five personality traits and leadership style. As a leader with may be personality type A, may be more effective to carry a leadership style A. However, ability to adapt and be flexible is require at any personality traits for the most effective leadership style.

Do not follow me, yet let’s walk with me

This leadership style most influenced by 3 aspects, which are the leader, the team members and the organization. However, in this reflection the focus mainly will be given to the LEADER. Why the LEADER? This is because, as a leader he/she needs to guide, inspire and influence the team members and move the organization together. Let’s reflect the leader’s style by reviewing the 5 Level of Leadership from John C. Maxwell.

Based on the 5 Level of Leadership by John C. Maxwell (1995), the first level is position, which people follow you because they have to. Second level is permission, where people follow you because they want to. The third level is production, when people follow you because what you have done for the organization. The forth level is people development, where people follow because what you have done to them. The last level, fifth level is pinnacle where people follow because of who you are and what you represent.

So, as a leader, which level you want yourself to be? As for me, as a leader I want to be at the level 2,4 and 5. It is not at only one particular level. I do not want people follow me either because I am the leader to them or what I have done for them.

In conclusion, the best leadership style basically depends on the personality of the leader. It depends on how the leader able to adapt and be flexible with the team members at any situation. It is based on how the leader can observe the situation and apply the best leadership style at that particular time. As a leader, it important to learn to develop, because a leader deals will human being. So as how human evolve by era, a leader also needs to develop and evolve with the best style that can be.
