 Weekly Reflections 11 (26th June 2024)

SHORT TALK – CONTINGENCY LEADERSHIP

Week 15; This week was all about presentation of “short talk” by all classmates related with topic given, which was Kepimpinan Kontegensi adalah Sesuai Untuk Kepimpinan Abad 21. During this session all classmates shared their knowledge and opinion regarding this contingency leadership style, either it suitable to be used within this 21st century or otherwise. They shared their views, ideas and opinions about contingency leadership style in various ways and situations. There were 19 students in total that participated in this short talk presentation.

 The 19 Short Talk’s Presenters

I am the number 4 that presenting on that day.

Generally, this contingency leadership was prominent since 1970 to 1980. This contingency leadership is focuses towards 2 things which are situation and relationship. As a leader, we need to be able to focus on specific situation in order for us to deliver our leadership’s effectively. Besides, we also need to be able to adapt him or herself in order to become an effective and good leader. There are 4 model that related under this contingency leadership style, which are:

 1.     Fiedler’s Model: developed in 1960 by Fred Fiedler and he emphasised that leadership style is to be fixed and unchangeable. As a leader, we need to aware with our own leadership style and alert with situational favourableness. Leader that able to match his or her) style with situation that he interested with or like to do will perform better as an effective leader.

2.     Situational Model: developed by Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard in 1969. In this situational model noted that an effective leadership is when the leader able to adapt his (or her) behaviour with the demand of situation. They able to adapt by telling, selling, participating or delegating with the team members.

3.     Path-goal Model: developed by Martin Evans in 1970. Evans enhanced as a leader he (or she) need to be able to extremely flexible with the team members. He needs to be able to adapt his behaviour and have realistic expectation towards the team members. This flexible leadership and realistic expectation will be able to give the positive outcome to the team members.

4.     Decision-Making Model: developed by Victor Vroom and Philips Yetton in 1973. This decision-making model also well known as “Vroom and Yetton Contingency model”. This model focuses on the crucial element in leadership which is the decision making. It also determines the relationship between the leader and the team members. As a leader we can decide by 3 style; which are the autocratic, consultative and collaborative.

During my short talk, I also focused on highlighting what is effective leadership? Basically, there is no solid effective leadership style that match to all. However, this contingency leadership style is one of great style for the leader to be able to manage and understand him (or her) self, and also understand the situation that he will be in-charged. I also highlighted that as a leader we need to be able to have clear objectives and aims towards our organisation. By having clear objectives, we able to manage ourselves by perform strictly as a leader, and/or sometimes be able to be adapt within the situation or the needs of our team members.

My recorded presentation can be watched at YouTube at attached link: https://youtu.be/Pas8XcByfoo?si=KM06xpEaK4_d21lv

It was strongly a great experience for me during this short talk, where I am able to learn and get new ideas related this contingency leadership. Basically, my classmate explains clearly by giving example within the family, classroom, school, as research students, as horse rider and during Covid-19 situations. Besides, some of the classmate also explained this contingency leadership style with our current Prime Minister and also new era leader like Elizabeth Holmes.

Elizabeth Holmes.

Inconclusion regarding this week reflection on short talk, as a leader we can apply this contingency leadership. This leadership mainly about the flexibility of the leader, ability to adapt with specific situation, the important of communication with team members, take responsibilities towards decision that had been made and able to have a directive focused or aims.

Our classmate had shared a quote from our previous Khalif about leadership, which leadership in Islam. The quote was:

From this quote we identified that the leader holds a strong responsibility towards the organisation. It is not only about him (or her) self, it also involved the team members or people around him. This quote also showed how big the relationship of a leader. So, as a leader, all responsibilities are on our shoulders. As a leader is important to bring our organisation and team members towards positive relationship and situation, and towards positive outcomes for both leader and team members.

At the end of the class, Prof. Dr Yusof Boon had shared some knowledge related with public speaking or presentation style. Mainly as a speaker the most important thing is time consume, we need to focused on time that we use that need to be follow the rules and guidance. Besides, Prof Yusof also highlighted about our dress code during presentation, observe our audience and must be able to manage our language that match with our audiences. Prof. Yusof also highlighted regarding the important of contingency leadership in this 21st century. Our talk should meet with the audience’s needs, alert with situation and lastly what we been talking is understand by the audience.

Our lecturer for UHPS 6013, Prof. Dr Yusof Boon

This week is the last week for this semester. It was great when we can gather for the last time in the class face to face and have this great sharing opinions. It was great journey with guidance of our lecturer Prof. Dr, Yusof Boon. Besides, it was an honour for me to be able to be in the class and learn about this subject Dynamic of Leadership (UHPS 6013). Alhamdulillah, for all the knowledge and experienced gathered since pass 4 months. Insya-Allah, a great leader is always someone who benefits others.

As usual after the presentation Prof. Yusof will concluded the session and asked for some feedback from class members. Prof. also shared about the important of communication skills among leaders. People are complex, as a leader we need to be able to communicate clearly so that our team members will understand better and avoid any conflict. He gave the analogy of scammer and

“si penjual ubat”. How they can convey people to trust what they are talking about or selling, even we know basically the thing that they shared is scam and not effective at all. That is why communication is important as a leader, in order to build trust of our team members and later able to together perform in the organisation.

 Weekly Reflections 8 (29th May 2024)

First Weekly Presentation (Team 1 and Team 2)

Week 12; today session was a presentation day for 2 groups. First presentation was done by Asma Zulkeflee and Ahmad Fadzli Abu Sahmah with a topic Contingency Leadership Theories. Then, second presentation was by Tan Kai Xin and Adityanindran A/L Mahaindran with a topic Power, Politics, Networking and Negotiation.

Presentation’s slide (front page) by group 1 (Asma and Fadzli)

Topic: Contingency Leadership Theories

Asma and Fadzli had presented regarding the leadership theories and leadership model. I interested in their presentation that mentioned there is no one best leadership style that suitable solely to build an organisation, to lead the company or to make any decision. Yet, it depends on various factors. Besides, as a leader, we can plan our leadership either wanted to carry it out as boss-centered or subordinates-centered.

This first group also presented about 3 leadership models, which are (1) normative leadership model, (2) situational leadership model and (3) path-goal leadership model.

Presentation’s slide (front page) by group 2 (Aditya and Kai Xin)

Topic: Power, Politic, Networking and Negotiation

For Aditya and Kai Xin, this long presentation and important topic had been discussed. Kai Xin presented regarding power and networking, while Aditya presented about politic and negotiation.

In power aspects, in leadership there is noted 2 type of power, which are position power and personal power. Then these to type of powers were subdivided into:

1.     Position power: legitimate power (based on the position that given to the leader by the organisation), reward power (the ability of the leader either to punish or reward the team members) and coercive power (which identify that appropriate to maintain discipline and enforce rules).

2.     Personal power: referent power (based on leader’s personal relationship with the team members), expert power (based in the leader’s skills and knowledge), information power (the leader’s ability to gain more information) and connection power (based on the leader’s relationship with others influential or powerful leader/person).

In politic aspect, I interested to reflect on the positive and negative of politic. It presented that positivity in politic leadership where as a leader it can enhance further the decision making, enhance career advancement and able to have resource mobility. However, in term of negativity in politic leadership, it can encourage toxic environment, develop unethical behaviour and reduce the efficiency of the team. For networking, one aspect that grabs my attention was, networking in enhance from effective communication. This networking may help to get new opportunities, developing a business, job satisfaction, enhance performance, salary, power and promotion.

Lastly, they presented regarding the negotiation which important for job searches, labour relations, sales and everyday organisational interactions. The group shared 5 effective negotiation strategies, which include active listening, clear communication, empathy, flexibility and problem solving.

After the presentations done, discussion was done actively between presenters, students and Prof Yusof. 2 questions were asked by me regarding the leadership and teams; and networking aspect in leadership. From the questions and discussion, I can reflect that as a leader we need to choose the right subordinates in order to bring our aims and objectives of the organisations achieved. However, if we unable to choose the right subordinates or team members, we need to meet our leadership style with them. We need to find ways to get the team to be in the same movement with us, so that at the end the objectives of good organisation achieved. Besides, Narvina also added in this discussion a great information, as a leader we need to focus on our traits and ethic. We need to know that as a leader we are dominant towards our followers. Besides, the empathic aspect as a leader, we need also to make sure that we are the one that lead and in charge.

While for issue regarding the networking, how much is too much or will make others think the networking is some way of bribe? Great discussion done that lead by Prof Yusof. He mentioned about fruit’s brother (saudara buah), which those who only we will see when fruit’s festival. In this case, it is important for us the build a genuine networking. It is not only we meet them when we need them, yet the networking is genuine because we want to develop it. For example, if we want to develop a networking with leader A and B, sometimes we will send regards during Hari Raya or Chinese New Year to them. Besides, we also will do it to them when there are other occasions. People can sense and observe, either our intention to the networking is genuine or vice versa. So, as a leader we need to keep it clear, positive and consistent. Besides, we need to understand, why we make the networking with them.

Before the class ends, Krishna asked question about the challenges that a leader before an era of digital might have, compared to now with a lot of excess for networking. Prof Yusof shared that this new era of networking improved and make the relationship better compared than before. Leaders before us, need to meet with the people directly, face to face, which that was the challenges. It needs effort, patient, time consume, monetary and real relationship.

Weekly Reflection 7: Kepimpinan Jalanan #DUYONGkita

 Weekly Reflections 7 (24th May 2024)

 Kepimpinan Jalanan #DUYONGkita

Week 11; Alhamdulillah, it was an alighting session when we can gain knowledge from that one experienced and great leader. An hour session seems fruitful and rich with ideas to be a great leader. Who is he? Let’s continue reading today’s class reflection.

Today webinar through WebEx was brought by Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSSH), Universiti Technologi Malaysia (UTM). It had been chaired by Ms. Nurhafizah Yahya and started with doa’s recitation by Mr. Mohammed Mustafa Hussien Al-Amrani. The session was moderated by PM Dr Jamilah Ahmad and the honour invited speaker was YB Datuk Mohd. Noor Helmy Bin Abdul Halem, who is the Deputy Exco of Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communication and also the ADUN of Duyong.

Program’s Poster

At first, the session slightly been disturbed by the technical issue, where the line was unclear and it hardly to hear what YB been talking about. I lost for awhile and only able to grabbed some of the information about YB’s background. YB Datuk Mohd. Noor Helmy Bin Abdul Halem, 43 years old is a native “Anak Jati” of Melaka that currently serving the people in Duyong. He managed to attract many followers, where it can be seen in his social media platforms with 985.2 million in TikTok and 213 million in Facebook. Today short session itself managed to grab 1.5 million audiences in TikTok and 121 in the WebEx. His slogan “Tuanku adalah rakyat. ADUN adalah mandat” and his leadership personality might be the reason why he has that numbers of followers. Next, let’s I share some of my reflections for today’s AWESOME session with YB Helmy.

2 platforms used during today’s session (WebEx and TikTok)

Pembentukan Karaktor; the first point that been mentioned by YB Helmy was character development. As a leader, a strong character is important in order to lead not only a person, yet the nation. For YB, he also took the personality test in order for him to understand his own personality before able to understand the people. Personality and effective leadership are linked, and 2 factors mediating the linked which are (1) the leader ability to understand within and between group political dynamic and (2) the degree to which the leader is seen as having integrity (Hogan & Judge, 2012). As for YB his experiences with his own people/community, getting to know with people from various races, be in the ground and not being ‘tone deaf’ by understanding them are the keys of success. Besides, a personality of “berkata benar walaupun pahit” (telling the truth even when it’s bitter) make him a genuine and different from other leaders.

YB stands firm and noted that what every we as a leader, our personality needs to be strong. We need to prepare ourselves as a person (personality), psychologically and spiritually to be a great leader. YB shared his experienced during his first time joining the politic, where he cried when he realised how hard to gain people trust for him to become their leader. He is a successful contractor before joining the politics, and when he needs to bag for a trust, it broke his heart that time. However, it can be summarized that it is really not easy to gain people’ trust, yet with our great personality, vast experiences and wise leadership the trust can be received and accepted too.

Keputusan; as a leader, we are always in a middle of other’s needs and our ability to give theirs need. A leader needs to do wise decision, so that the people understand why they can get or cannot get what they need for that particular time. As a leader, we need to do what is right and do not be too excessive in doing our role and responsibility. Dr Jamila elaborated during the session that YB Hemly is a model of authentic leadership, where there were no nonsense and no hanky panky when dealing with him. Authentic leadership is a leadership style exhibited by individuals who have high standard of integrity, take responsibility for their actions and make decisions based on principle rather than short-term success (Gavin, 2019). However, in authentic leadership, there are 4 important elements as a leader which are self-awareness, self-regulation, positive psychological capital and positive modelling (Dimovski et al., 2012).

Basically, YB Helmy is right as a person with authentic leadership style, where he is serious in term of his work with the community, and in the same time he able to mix and engage functionally with his people in the community. He is showing the positive elements in his leadership style and make people comfort when being around him. This can be seen in his Facebook, where he wore a superman costume with sarong (kain pelekat) in one of the events in the community.

From Berita Harian Online

Kepimpinan Jalanan; as a leader, there is need for us to be balance while carrying out our tasks. A leader needs to be knowledgeable so that we understand about laws and able to plan our actions and do the decision wisely educated. However, we also need to understand that why the people act, reacts or asks for their needs. From this, a leader should be able to balance between the laws and humanity. Laws is important in order for us to fix what is needed, and in the same times humanity is important for us not to neglected the needs of the people. YB mentioned during the session “bukan semua hak rakyat, ada juga hak yang tertakluk pada undang-undang” (not all issues are people’s right, that are rights that subjected to law).

A story that YB mentioned about “Makcik dan jalan raya”. This Makcik was asking for a proper road along ways to her house. She asked 5 leaders back then in her locality at that point, and all mentioned “insya-Allah”. Yet, still there is no proper road been done. Then, when this Makcik asked YB Hemly the same question, he strongly answered with he cannot do it because there is law regarding the road construction. There need to be at least 4 houses before a road can be constructed to the area, meanwhile for this Makcik there is only her house within that area.

The lesson from this Makcik story was, as a leader we do not promises to people something that we really cannot make it. Just let them know the truth even it is hard to be told. It might result with people did not liking us at that particular time, yet in the long run the people will understand why we did so. Generally, this top to bottom approach done by YB Helmy is a great approach for the leader to go to the underground in order to see the people needs. Then, go back to the top in order to set and fix the people issues within the top management.

In conclusion. As a leader, we need to put ourselves in the people’s shoes, in order for us to understand them more. I captured 2 powerful things from session with YB Mohd. Noor Helmy Bin Abdul Halem today, which are (1) read the positive comments in social media once. However, read the negative comments many times, because there will be something right in those negative comments that maybe been overlooked and supposedly to be done. (2) jangan tunggu sempurna baru nak bermula, mula terlebih dahulu untuk jadikan sempurna (do not wait for a perfection to start, yet start first to make it perfect).
