Weekly Reflections 9 (5th June 2024)
SECOND WEEKLY PRESENTATION
(TEAM 3 AND 5)
Week 12; This week we continue our weekly topic presentation with another 3 groups. This week involved 3topics, which are Communication, Coaching and Conflicts Skills; and Team Leadership.
The first
presentation was by Deepa Rani A/P Letchimun and Pravin A/L Rajan with the
topic Team Leadership. Based on this presentation they clarify regarding the
differences between group and team. Group is where a collection of people that
work together and mostly by hierarchical leadership style. Group emphasis on individual
performance and goals, reliance on individual abilities, has various values and
commitment, the leader and individual are more independent and needs a strong
leadership. While in team, people in team shared same mission, has collective
responsibility, shared leadership roles and has common goals and tasks. In the
team also, the leader enforcing each other individual performance standard and
all members been treated equally.
They also shared
great tips for team and group leaders. For great team discussion, they gave 5
tips which were; having clear and precise objectives, applying effective
leadership style, need to have follow up and evaluation, able to do
constructive method for conflict and make as structed process. While in group
discussion, a leader should; facilitate the discussion, encourage participants,
mediate conflicts, ensure accountability and give direction and clarity.

Then, the
presentation continued with the topic of Communication, Coaching and Conflicts
Skills. This topic presented by Muhammad Azim Aiman Bin Abd Azizi. He started
his presentation by sharing the definition of communication, which
communication basically is a process of conveying information and its meaning.
In communication, leader usually aim to give message to the team members, and
he shared the ideal way to giving message to our team members, which are need
to have clear goals to send the message, understand the member that will
received the message, and how, when and where to send the message. This
presentation also shared about coaching which include the process of giving
motivational feedback to team members in order to maintain and improve their
performance. While conflict is something that inevitable due to different
people’s opinions and way of thinking.
This presentation
shared good tips for effective coaching, which involve focus on behaviour and
not the person, do not critics, have the team an access to their own
performance, give specific and descriptive feedback, provide modelling and
training, avoid blame and embarrassments and give praise and recognition. There
also sharing about conflict style, which include the avoiding conflict style,
the accommodating conflict style, the forcing conflict style, the negotiating
conflict style and the collaborating conflict style. Generally, this
presentation shared lots of good skills and tips for leaders to enhance the
leadership style.

As usual after the
presentation Prof. Yusof will concluded the session and asked for some feedback
from class members. Prof. also shared about the important of communication
skills among leaders. People are complex, as a leader we need to be able to
communicate clearly so that our team members will understand better and avoid
any conflict. He gave the analogy of scammer and
“si penjual ubat”.
How they can convey people to trust what they are talking about or selling,
even we know basically the thing that they shared is scam and not effective at
all. That is why communication is important as a leader, in order to build
trust of our team members and later able to together perform in the
organisation.
